Review
by Kozo: Wong Jing’s Tricky Master is possibly the worst Stephen Chow film in years, which is fitting because this is really a Nick Cheung film. The popular TVB star is at his most annoying as a cop who enlists the help of Tricky Master Chow to outwit bad guy Ferrari (Wong Jing). Along the way, there are parodies of Man Called Hero, The Matrix, Bruce Lee, and just about every other HK gambling movie ever made.
Chow cruises through this movie and hits all his marks, but it’s not enough to save this overdone, totally obnoxious piece of commercial fluff. Nick Cheung needs to tone it down, and Wong Jing should stay away from both sides of the camera. Even the ace cast (Sandra Ng, Suki Kwan, Tats Lau) can’t save this turkey.
There are maybe twenty or so good jokes in this movie, but out of two hundred that ain’t so good. When you bat .100 it’s back to the minors for you. Obviously shot in a week, this movie is a creative nadir for HK pop cinema. It was also a big box-office hit, which only proves that people love Stephen Chow. Hell, I love Stephen Chow. But I didn’t like this movie. (Kozo 1999)
